On Memorial Day, I’d like to say “thanks” to all who’ve served and died to defend our country and our freedoms. My dad taught me to love my country, to respect my flag, and to stand up for what I believe in, no matter who doesn’t like it. He fought for what he believed in and almost died, bearing the scars and disabilities of his wounding til the day he died. He was proud of what he’d done, and happy to have done it.
He tried to back the Viet Nam war until it became apparent it was something we should never have gotten into in the first place. He volunteered to become a chaplin so he could go over there to minister to the servicemen who needed as much support as they could get, even tho he firmly believed they should never have been sent there in the first place. His request was rejected because he was too old, and it was one of the biggest regrets of his life. But he worked with the boys coming home, and the families of those who were sent over there, doing the best he could to offer comfort at a time when it was needed most.
At this time we are in another war without reason, and I often wonder what he would say about this one if he were still here. I know he would be as upset about it as he was about Viet Nam, maybe even more so, but he would also be ready and willing to do whatever he could for his brothers and sisters-in-arms, because he’d been where they are now and knew what they are thinking and how they are feeling. Our servicemen and women are doing a job most of us don’t want to do, and they do it with pride. They deserve our support, no matter what we think about the war itself, and I would like to thank them for their sacrifice.
Most of them are good, decent, honorable people who want to serve their country. True, there are some who have done things they shouldn’t have done, but in the heat of war sometimes we just can’t hear our “better angels” trying to tell us we are heading in the wrong direction. Please don’t let the bad actions of the few keep you from recognizing the honorable efforts of the many. These men and women aren’t responsible for getting us into this war, they are only doing their duty as best they can, for God, country, and family.
God bless all the men and women who are serving in Iraq, as well as those in Afghanistan and other areas of the world, all those who’ve served throughtout the years, and most especially those who’ve died to protect us all.
